Amalgamated Life
The Amalgamated history is a rich one that
demonstrates the innovative and dynamic culture from which it grew.
Amalgamated Life began operation in 1943 to provide life insurance,
health and disability coverage and retirement benefits to members
of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. In January 1992,
Amalgamated Life was approved by the New York State Insurance Department
to sell life, health and disability insurance commercially outside
our traditional non-profit base. This opened up new opportunities
for growth for Amalgamated Life. Our customers are primarily trade
union members covered under Taft-Hartley health and welfare and
pension plans. In 1997, Alicare, an Amalgamated affiliate, launched
the Labor Health Alliance, a purchasing cooperative for union sponsored
health and welfare funds. The focus of this alliance is joint purchasing
of Medicare risk contracts.
In 1987 Amalgamated Life
formed three subsidiaries: Alicomp, Inc., which provides customized
information technology solutions; Alicare, Inc., a third party administrator
of health benefits plans; and Amalgamated Agency, Inc., the brokerage
arm of the company which specializes in providing fiduciary liability
and other risk management services. In 1998, a new affiliate, Alicare
Medical Management, Inc. (AMM) was formed. AMM offers a complete
line of telephonic utilization review and managed care services
and is located in Salem, New Hampshire where there are approximately
50 staff members, many of them nursing professionals.
Amalgamated Life's management team is comprised
of Ronald L. Minikes, President & CEO. Senior Vice Presidents are:
Michael Hirsch, Arthur Kurek, Claire Levitt, Mark Schwartz, Tom Dalaney and Jeanne Jarvis-Meara. Vice Presidents include Paul
Mallen, Vice President & Chief Financial Officer; Raghubar Singh, Vice
President & Chief Information Officer; Martin Cohen, Vice President
& Chief Actuary; Victoria Sartor, Vice President & Controller. Other
Vice Presidents are: Nina Chakraborty, John Dubil, Thomas Thompson,
and Jeffery Warbet.
Amalgamated Life's corporate headquarters
are at 730 Broadway, New York, New York. Over 400 employees work
at this location, situated in the heart of Greenwich Village and
surrounded by NYU. It is easily accessible from the N & R & #6 subway
lines, as well as PATH. The computer services of Alicomp operate
out of Leonia, New Jersey. Alicare Medical Management is located
in Salem, New Hampshire where we have over 50 staff members providing
utilization review and managed care services. We also have offices
in Boston, MA, Las Vegas, NV, Washington, DC and Chicago, IL.
